WIP progress for my entry for Artstation's Beneath the Waves Challenge!
8 week challenge to create a real time scene on the topic of "Beneath the Waves" either using your own concept or one provided in earlier parts of the challenge - I wasn't going to participate in this due to lack of time, but I am a total sucker for the underwater world, having a slightly unhealthy love of fishkeeping and I saw one of the provided concepts (below) and was inspired to join in. I have limited time - about an hour a night, and then a few more at the weekend - but I am also using the project to get to grips with Unity, so it is time very well spent.
Also, I get to model coral and fish, so I am very happy.
Going for a ethereal feel, heavily inspired by the wonderful Abzu, and also by Ecco the dolphin. Also going for a cartoony feel and hopefully some lovely hand painted textures by the end.
Bit more done - some new corals, objects, just slowly filling the world. Most base meshes done, time to start detailing and texturing!
lots of coral types going in, including a fan coral made from alphas as a mesh version would just be too many polys. Going to use this as a "grass" to fill out a lot of the distant areas
First few coral blockouts going in! This is the exciting bit, getting to fill the world with lots of little interesting things!
Going to set up the area as though an actual game space rather than just a static scene, so will be concentrating on making interest across the scene, and having a few "beauty" spots
Played with colours on the concept - I want something really bright and awesome (as though you come out from a dark, lonely part of the sea into this hidden gem) along with some early notes on what needs to be modelled.
